Winter racing in New Orleans
The Fair Grounds 2026–2027 Thoroughbred season runs from November into March at the New Orleans racecourse. The official calendar lists November 19 as opening day and March 21 as closing day. Those dates identify one meet spanning two calendar years, with individual race days inside that period.
Start with a date and then select a race from its card. The meet calendar, a feature race and a numbered contest are different levels of the schedule. Louisiana Derby Day, for example, describes a whole day’s program, while the Louisiana Derby itself is one race within it.
Holiday, twilight and feature-day start times
The official 2026–2027 schedule includes different first posts for ordinary afternoons, selected holidays, twilight cards and feature days. Thanksgiving, Louisiana Champions Day and Louisiana Derby Day have their own listings. Do not assume a single afternoon start time applies throughout the season.
Use the date-specific first post to plan the start of your visit, then the individual race’s post time to follow a particular contest. New Orleans uses Central Time; choose your own zone if watching elsewhere. The card keeps its Louisiana date, even when an evening race falls after midnight for you.
